As U.S. President Donald Trump signed yet another executive order—extending the 90-day suspension period for his proposed "reciprocal tariffs" and pushing the implementation date to August 1—Jeffry Frieden, Professor of International and Public Affairs and Political Science at Columbia University, stated that the rest of the world is beginning to explore ways to insulate itself from the United States.
“The rest of the world is now trying to figure out how to protect itself from the United States so that international trade can continue without the U.S.,” Frieden explained.
He added that it is now conceivable that major economies, including China, Brazil, India, and the European Union, which have largely supported the existing multilateral trade system, may choose to pursue a parallel trade framework that excludes the U.S.
